Waga Energy to produce biomethane at new site in the United States
Waga Energy has been selected to build and operate a biomethane production unit at the Eco-Hill waste storage facility in Atkinson (Illinois), operated by an affiliate of Lakeshore Recycling Systems (LRS).
The French producer is thus expanding its presence in the United States, just days after commissioning its third unit alongside Casella Waste Systems in Pennsylvania.
A Wagabox unit injecting into the local network by 2028
Waga Energy will equip the Eco-Hill site with its Wagabox technology, patented by the group, to transform gas naturally emitted by waste into biomethane injected directly into gas networks.
The installation will be capable of processing 4,800 m³/h of raw gas and will be able to produce approximately 180 GWh of biomethane per year, injected into the local network as a substitute for fossil natural gas. Commissioning is scheduled for 2028.
A long-term partnership with revenue sharing
As part of a long-term partnership, Waga Energy will finance the construction and operation of the unit and will commercialize the biomethane. In return, Eco-Hill will receive a share of the revenues generated by sales.
The Eco-Hill site, owned and operated by an affiliate of LRS, receives more than one million tonnes of waste per year, collected mainly from the Chicago metropolitan area. Gas from the decomposition of this waste is currently captured and burned in a flare.
A project avoiding 47,500 tonnes of CO₂ equivalent per year
According to the calculation method of the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the project will avoid the emission of approximately 47,500 tonnes of CO₂ equivalent per year.
Waga Energy currently operates 38 biomethane production units in France, Spain, Canada and the United States, representing an installed capacity of 2.1 TWh per year, and has 20 units under construction worldwide.
