Worldline and ING Execute Europe's First 'Agentic' Payment
Worldline and ING announced on Tuesday the successful execution of the first pan-European 'agentic' payment in production. The transaction, conducted between an ING customer and a merchant in the Netherlands via Mastercard, demonstrates that AI agent-initiated payments can function securely and compliantly across multiple European markets from end to end.
Transaction Orchestrated on Worldline's Infrastructure
The operation involved a transaction between an ING cardholder and a Dutch merchant, operating on the same underlying infrastructure in Belgium and crossing the Mastercard network. The merchant's AI agent identified concert tickets within a predefined budget, presented a selection to the customer, and then finalized the purchase only after explicit approval from the consumer. Authentication was ensured by ING's established secure mechanisms, serving as the issuing bank, while Worldline processed the payment end-to-end on its issuance and acquisition platforms.

The transaction carries explicit identifiers revealing its agent nature, providing transparency to the issuing bank which retains control through authentication and authorization. The consumer remains directly involved in the final purchase decision, and the payment is processed in a traceable manner through the complete transaction chain. This architecture places consumer approval at the heart of the model, ensuring security and trust among the three parties.
Foundation for Future Use Cases
Beyond this singular purchase, this pilot establishes that the necessary technological and business flows for agent-based payments are ready for production on a European infrastructure. It creates a foundation for exploring future use cases, including recurring transactions and delegated purchases within predefined settings.
