Nokia Secures Major 5G Contract in the UK with Virgin Media O2
Nokia has been chosen by Virgin Media O2 for a significant multi-year program to deploy and modernize its 5G Radio Access Network (RAN) in the UK. This agreement continues a strategic collaboration between the two companies spanning over two decades.
Multi-Year Contract for 5G RAN Deployment and Modernization
Nokia has won a multi-year contract from Virgin Media O2 for a major program to deploy and modernize the 5G Radio Access Network across the UK. Under this agreement, Nokia will provide its latest generation AirScale portfolio, including an ultra-high capacity modular baseband and energy-efficient, future-proof Massive MIMO radios. This new contract reinforces Nokia's role as one of the main RAN partners for Virgin Media O2, following a previously announced agreement to continue the deployment and modernization of 5G.
Enhancing Network Quality and Accelerating Modernization
The deployment will enable Virgin Media O2 to enhance network quality and accelerate modernization through optimized spectrum usage and advanced energy-saving software features. Nokia's latest generation GigaSite architecture, Dual-Band Massive MIMO, and AI-enabled baseband platforms will support seamless scalability and operational efficiency throughout the deployment. As part of this new commitment, Nokia and Virgin Media O2 will deepen their collaboration on joint innovation programs, including pilots and proof-of-concept projects exploring advanced RAN intelligence, automation, and energy-efficient architectures aligned with Virgin Media O2's mobile transformation plan.
