Airbus Supports Barry Callebaut in Sustaining its Supply Chains
Airbus Defence and Space is collaborating with Barry Callebaut to monitor deforestation using a satellite imaging solution, according to the group's statement.
Supporting Sustainable Cocoa Supply Chains
Airbus Defence and Space is aiding Barry Callebaut, a chocolate and cocoa manufacturer, in monitoring deforestation across its cocoa supply chain, as stated in the announcement. The collaboration involves the use of the Starling solution, which relies on space imaging to provide detailed insights on lands and cocoa plantations. This technology enables the differentiation of vegetation types and tracking changes in forest cover.
Enhancing Compliance and Environmental Oversight
As part of its 'Forever Chocolate' program, Barry Callebaut is committed to sustainable sourcing. With the integration of Starling, the company monitors environmental risks and enhances its internal compliance, the statement notes. The solution allows for automatic supply chain analysis, verification of evidence, and reduces the need for on-ground investigations.
Starling: A Joint Initiative for Environmental Impact Measurement
Launched in 2016, Starling is a collaborative initiative between Airbus and the Earthworm Foundation, aimed at measuring the environmental impact of supply chains. It utilizes high-resolution satellite data to support commitments to zero-deforestation and no-conversion. Starling leverages imagery from commercial satellites and the Sentinel mission to monitor vegetation changes globally.
