Alstom Secures a 295 Million Euro Contract for Lausanne Metro
Alstom has signed a contract with the Lausanne Regional Public Transport (tl) to upgrade the M2 metro line. The project involves the deployment of a new next-generation CBTC system and a mid-life upgrade of the existing train fleet.
Complete Modernization Contract for M2
Lausanne Regional Public Transport and Alstom signed a contract on May 5, 2026, valued at 295 million euros to modernize the Lausanne M2 metro line. The project combines the deployment of a CBTC (Communication-Based Train Control) system with a mid-life upgrade of the existing train fleet.
The new Urbalis Fluence CBTC system utilizes a train-centered architecture with more onboard intelligence. This solution is suited for the modernization of existing, fully automated metro lines, limiting infrastructure modifications and additional ground equipment.
Capacity Increase and Service Improvements
The project will increase the frequency of operations and the passenger transport capacity. The new automatic control will allow trains to operate at shorter intervals and with greater precision, thus reducing waiting times and meeting the growing demand from passengers.
Alongside the installation of the signaling system, the M2 fleet will undergo a major upgrade at Alstom's Villeneuve site in Switzerland as part of the FlexCare Modernise program. This upgrade will include the renewal of major onboard systems, including the Train Control and Monitoring System (TCMS), as well as improvements to interior spaces and a refresh of the train exteriors.
Schedule and Technical Support
The agreement includes technical support and obsolescence management services to ensure reliable operation of the M2 line during the transition period and beyond. The works will be staggered to minimize disruptions to daily service, with most installation and testing activities conducted during nighttime hours.
