Alstom Secures Major €380 Million Contract with ScotRail
Alstom has entered into a long-term agreement with ScotRail Trains Limited for technical support and the supply of spare parts for its Class 222 train fleet in Scotland. The deal is worth a total of £330 million (€380 million), combining a 10-year maintenance contract and a comprehensive refurbishment program.
Comprehensive Technical Support and Modernization
Alstom has signed a Technical Support and Spare Parts Supply Agreement (TSSSA) with ScotRail Trains Limited covering the operation, maintenance support, and modernization of its Class 222 fleet. The 10-year contract extends until March 2036, with an option to extend until March 2042. It covers 22 five-car Class 222 trains and includes the provision of technical assistance and spare parts, as well as an extensive renovation and modernization program aimed at enhancing reliability, onboard comfort, and embedded systems. Initial maintenance and support activities will be conducted at multiple sites in Scotland, including Polmadie, Haymarket, and Inverness.
Maintenance and Renovation Financial Details
The maintenance agreement is valued at approximately £250 million. The renovation program, concluded with Beacon, the rolling stock owner, amounts to approximately £80 million. This includes a complete overhaul of the interior and exterior, featuring new seats, tables, carpets, LED lighting, and modernized driver's cabins, as well as the refurbishment of toilets and a redesign aimed at optimizing space for luggage, bicycles, and accessibility.
Upgrades to Onboard Systems and Additional Features
The program includes significant upgrades to onboard systems, such as an intelligent start/stop system, new passenger information systems and multimedia displays in the cars, hearing aid announcement systems, automatic passenger counting, video surveillance, Wi-Fi connectivity, and enhanced cybersecurity measures. Defibrillators will be installed in each train. Alstom will mobilize technicians, engineers, supply chain support, spare parts management, specialized tooling, and data hosting services. The scope also includes train-the-trainer programs for drivers and maintenance staff.
