AMG Critical Materials Opens the Only Metal Chrome Plant in the United States
AMG Critical Materials announced on Wednesday the opening of a metal chrome production facility in Pennsylvania. This new facility makes the company the sole producer of this critical material in the United States, ending total reliance on imports since the last American plant in the sector closed in 2006.
A Strategic Facility to Secure American Supply
The New Castle, Pennsylvania facility opened its doors on Wednesday with a planned annual production capacity of 6,500 tons. AMG invested $15 million in this facility, which represents a major step for the security of critical material supplies in the United States.
Until now, the United States imported 100% of its metal chrome, a situation described as a risk to the supply chain and national security. Globally, only three plants in the West produce metal chrome: two now belong to AMG (in the United Kingdom and the United States), with others located in China and Russia.
An Essential Material for Aerospace and Clean Technologies
Metal chrome is a key component of nickel-chrome superalloys used in aviation engines, including the LEAP engine, as well as in space launch vehicles, including SpaceX's Starship. It is also crucial for clean energy systems such as solid oxide fuel cells.
AMG has established experience in this sector. Through AMG Chrome, the group has been producing metal chrome in Rotherham, United Kingdom, since 1938 with a current capacity of 15,000 tons, serving clients worldwide.
Over $400 Million Invested in Recent Years
In recent years, AMG Critical Materials has invested more than $400 million in its American operations, including facilities producing chrome, vanadium, and titanium. These investments reflect the company's long-term commitment to strengthening domestic manufacturing and supporting critical material supply chains.
