ArcelorMittal: CO? Emissions Down by 47.7%, Is the Green Bet Shaping Up?
ArcelorMittal has released its 2025 sustainability report, highlighting significant improvements in safety indicators and a substantial reduction in its absolute carbon emissions. The company also details its revised decarbonization strategy in response to new market conditions and energy policies.
Significant Safety Improvements in Three-Year Transformation Program
As part of its three-year transformation program, ArcelorMittal recorded significant improvements in its key safety indicators in 2025. The Fatal Frequency Rate (FFR) decreased by over 50% year-on-year, reaching the lowest level in the company's history, while the serious injury frequency rate dropped by 7%. More than 130 safety roadmaps containing over 3,000 targeted actions are deployed globally as part of a unified approach to build a 'single safety culture' supporting the group's ambition to achieve zero fatalities and zero serious injuries.
Substantial Reduction in Scope 1 and 2 Emissions
ArcelorMittal has reduced its absolute Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 47.7% since 2018, with a carbon intensity of 1.79 tons of CO? per ton of steel in 2025. Based on committed investments and current market and policy conditions, the group expects to reduce its carbon intensity by up to 10% by 2030 compared to 2018, while maintaining its ambition to achieve net-zero by 2050. The transformation project at the ArcelorMittal Dunkirk site, worth 1.3 billion euros, involves replacing a blast furnace with a 2 million ton electric arc furnace, reducing the site's emissions by about 25%. The group expects to bring 5.4 million tons of additional electric arc furnace capacity online globally by 2030. In the renewable energy sector, ArcelorMittal has commissioned 1.9 GW of solar, wind, and hybrid capacity in India, Brazil, and Argentina, with an additional 1.4 GW in development to be operational by 2028. These projects aim to provide competitive low-carbon electricity to steel production sites and joint ventures, reducing energy costs and enabling short-term emission reductions. Revenues from renewable energy, electric steels, selected production in electric arc furnace/direct reduction, and low-carbon building panels represented 13% of the group's total revenue in 2025.
