Atos: Syntel Ordered to Pay $236.9 Million in U.S. Lawsuit, Company 'Takes Note'
The U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York issued its preliminary ruling before the final judgment on March 27, 2026, in the lawsuit between Syntel and Cognizant and its subsidiary TriZetto. Atos Group, which acquired Syntel in 2018, acknowledges the order to pay $236.9 million (€204.1 million).
Court Decision and Financial Implications
The court's decision affirms the jury's verdict from June 30, 2025, regarding compensatory damages set at $69,977,813. The judge reduced the amount of punitive damages previously awarded to $139,955,626, which is double the compensatory damages. This reduction is contingent upon TriZetto's acceptance, otherwise, a new trial on punitive damages will be ordered. The court also awarded $12,395,484.50 for attorney's fees, in addition to the previously awarded $14,548,992.98 for attorney's fees. Interest on the compensatory damages at the New York State statutory rate of 9% from January 9, 2018, will be added to the total amount of $236.9 million.
Next Steps in the Legal Process
TriZetto must submit a letter by April 10, 2026, indicating whether it accepts the reduction in punitive damages. The parties are instructed to consult and submit a proposal for the drafting of the final judgment before the same date. This decision comes in a lawsuit initiated in 2015 between Syntel and TriZetto, prior to Syntel's acquisition by Atos Group in 2018. Atos Group reserves the right to appeal and is currently conducting a detailed analysis of the decision.
