Colas: Its Subsidiary Destia Wins a €200M Contract for the Vantaa Tramway
Destia, the Finnish subsidiary of Colas, has signed the contract for the second phase of the Vantaa tramway project in Finland. This contract, worth approximately 200 million euros, covers the construction of the last section of the western line of the tramway, with operations scheduled to begin by the end of 2029.
A €200 Million Contract for the Last Section
Destia has won the contract for the second phase of the Vantaa tramway as part of an alliance responsible for its construction. This contract represents an amount of approximately 200 million euros for Destia and concerns the remaining section of the western line to be constructed in Vantaa. The project includes the construction of the last western sector of the tramway (12 kilometers), as well as work on public utilities and electrification networks.
The first phase, initiated in November 2025, marked the commencement of the construction. The pace of the work will intensify in the spring and summer, with the continuation of complex constructions and temporary traffic adjustments to facilitate the layout of the tramway platform and public space.
A Major Urban Project for the Helsinki Region
The Vantaa tramway is supported by the City of Vantaa, with participation from the Helsinki Region Environmental Services Authority (HSY) and Capital Region Urban Transport Ltd, representing the City of Helsinki. The total value of the project (phases 1 and 2) is estimated at about 750 million euros, with Destia's overall share being approximately 433 million euros.
Operations of the tramway will begin by the end of 2029. This light rail line will connect the easternmost districts of the city to the railway network and provide easy access to Helsinki Airport. Upon completion of the project, Vantaa will become the fourth city in Finland to have a tram network.
Urban Development and Demographic Challenges
The tramway is part of a broad urban development program aimed at supporting long-term demographic and economic growth. The City of Vantaa aims to attract 60,000 new residents and create 30,000 new jobs along the route by 2050.
Heikki Haasmaa, CEO of Destia, stated: 'This tramway is a significant urban project, fully leveraging Destia's expertise in railway infrastructure in complex environments. The work is progressing at a steady pace and we are proud to contribute to the development of sustainable public transport for the residents.'
