Colas, TotalEnergies, and Volvo Partner to Electrify Urban Construction Sites
Colas, TotalEnergies, and the Volvo CE and Volvo Trucks entities have signed a partnership to accelerate the energy transition of urban construction sites. The collaboration relies on mobile charging solutions and connected electric machinery, initially tested on construction sites in the Lyon region.
A Partnership for Decarbonizing Urban Construction Sites
The partnership brings together Colas (a subsidiary of Bouygues), TotalEnergies, Volvo Construction Equipment (Volvo CE), and Volvo Trucks to focus on energy transition goals in the construction sector. The partners are leveraging their respective expertise: Colas' operational expertise in dense urban construction sites, TotalEnergies' know-how in supplying low-carbon energy and delivery to sites, and Volvo's technological expertise in electric construction equipment and connected trucks.
An Experiment Launched in the Lyon Region
The initial pilot projects will be conducted on construction sites in the Lyon region, coordinated by Colas' Saint-Priest agency. A mobile electric charging unit will be tested to power electric machinery and vehicles in an urban environment, reducing reliance on thermal generators. Volvo CE's EWR150 Electric excavator will be deployed for the first time in France in this context, while TotalEnergies will optimize the availability of low-carbon energy at the intervention sites. This partnership complements existing initiatives between Colas and TotalEnergies, including the use of HVO biofuels for the thermal fleet, the installation of charging infrastructure powered by renewable electricity, and the establishment of solar power plants at Colas sites.
A Gradual Deployment in France and Internationally
The results from the experiments in the Lyon region will allow a gradual deployment of this low-carbon ecosystem to other urban construction sites, both in France and internationally, according to the terms of the press release. This approach is part of Colas' low-carbon roadmap, which projects a consolidated turnover of 16 billion euros by 2025 and operates nearly 60,000 construction sites annually.
