TotalEnergies and Mistral invest over €100M in AI for exploration
TotalEnergies announced a three-year partnership with Mistral focused on developing artificial intelligence models for its exploration and reservoir engineering activities.
The agreement provides for an investment of over 100 million euros and the creation of a joint scientific laboratory.
A three-year partnership worth over 100 million euros
TotalEnergies and Mistral announced on September 15, 2026 a three-year partnership representing an investment of over 100 million euros.
The agreement aims to develop a new generation of frontier artificial intelligence models to support TotalEnergies geoscience experts in the exploration, characterization and development of oil and gas reservoirs.
A joint laboratory combining subsurface data and agentic AI
The partnership will build on the latest advances in artificial intelligence, particularly in agentic AI, to combine a heritage of nearly 10 petaflops of data with nearly a century of knowledge and expertise accumulated by TotalEnergies in geosciences and reservoir engineering.
The two groups will create a joint scientific laboratory, bringing together TotalEnergies' subsurface teams with Mistral's technological capabilities, to develop solutions meeting the Company's business needs. The objective is to generate multiple scenarios for the development of exploration opportunities as well as for the optimization and extension of the lifespan of existing projects.
Proprietary models within a European framework
According to Patrick Pouyanné, President and Chief Executive Officer of TotalEnergies, "exploration and reservoir engineering are among the areas where artificial intelligence can create the most value for our activities". He added that this partnership reflects the group's commitment to contributing to the development of a European digital ecosystem.
Arthur Mensch, co-founder and Chief Executive Officer of Mistral, indicated that this project illustrates "the ability of our models to support complex industrial processes". The agreement enables TotalEnergies to develop proprietary models within a European digital ecosystem and to enhance the value of its subsurface data.
