Fermentalg: European Green Light for Galdieria Blue Dye, Following FDA Approval
Fermentalg announces the positive opinion from the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) on its natural blue dye Galdieria Blue, derived from the microalgae Galdieria sulphuraria. This scientific validation paves the way for its upcoming inclusion on the list of authorized food additives in Europe.
EFSA's Final Assessment
EFSA has published its final conclusions after a review of over 5 years, stating that 'there are no safety concerns associated with the use of Galdieria Blue extract as a food additive in the proposed uses and at typical levels of use.' This positive scientific opinion, which raises no safety concerns, is a significant step towards commercialization in Europe. The European Commission is now expected to list the product in the coming months on the list of authorized food additives in the European Union.
European Authorization to Complement FDA's
The European authorization will complement the one obtained in May 2025 from the FDA for the American market. Galdieria Blue offers an alternative to the synthetic dye Blue Brilliant #1. Industrial production of the dye has started at one of the Huvepharma group's sites, an industrial partner and key shareholder. Beyond food applications, for which a marketing contract is being negotiated with Givaudan, Fermentalg is developing applications in dietary supplements, cosmetics, and dermocosmetics. Regulatory approvals enhance the likelihood of gaining new approvals in other geographical areas, primarily in Canada, Mexico, and Australia.
