GTT unveils advances in methane carriers and ethane carriers at Gastech 2026
On the sidelines of Gastech 2026, GTT Energy detailed several technical developments concerning methane carriers, ethane carriers and LNG-propelled container ships. These initiatives extend the two offerings presented on September 15, 2026 by the group's operating unit dedicated to containment systems and energy management.
GTT Energy recalled the launch of two offerings mentioned in its press release of September 15, 2026: a new-generation LNG fuel containment solution and the LNG Performance Centre, an ecosystem of services for methane carriers bringing together cargo management, voyage optimization and containment system monitoring.
GTT and Hudong-Zhonghua obtained Approvals in Principle from the American Bureau of Shipping, Bureau Veritas, China Classification Society, DNV and Lloyd's Register for a 174,000 m³ vessel equipped with GTT NEXT1 membrane technology, enabling a cargo daily evaporation rate of 0.07%.
GTT, Shell and Lloyd's Register have also launched a joint development project focusing on a 200,000 m³ methane carrier concept combining hybrid-electric propulsion and GTT NEXT1 technology. GTT also obtained an Approval in Principle from Lloyd's Register to extend the interval between two dry dock passages to 7.5 years, compared to five years typically, and a study conducted with Lloyd's Register Advisory confirmed the compatibility of 200,000 m³ methane carriers with the majority of existing LNG terminals.

In the liquefied ethane segment, GTT, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries and Lloyd's Register have launched a joint development project around an ultra-large 150,000 m³ ethane carrier incorporating Mark III Slim technology. GTT and Hudong-Zhonghua obtained an Approval in Principle from DNV for a large 100,500 m³ ethane carrier equipped with the NO96 Super+ membrane containment system, fitted with a bi-oblique tank No. 4.
GTT also presented advances aimed at environmental objectives. Its 2 barg membrane technology designed for LNG-propelled container ships received an Approval in Principle from Lloyd's Register, following an initial approval from Bureau Veritas at SMM 2026.
Finally, an insulation solution based on hydrofluoroolefins developed by Dongsung Finetec passed all stages of GTT's qualification and certification process, as part of the group's transition towards blowing agents with very low global warming potential for its membrane containment technologies.
