NH90 Block 2: NATO Entrusts Airbus and Leonardo with Helicopter Modernization
NAHEMA, the NATO agency responsible for the NH90 program, has awarded NHIndustries a contract for an architectural study for the Block 2 modernization of the NH90. This biennial study prepares the evolution of the helicopter for operations in 2040 and beyond.
Contract Signing and Modernization Details
NAHEMA has signed a contract with NHIndustries, a consortium including Airbus, Leonardo, and GKN Aerospace, to initiate the architectural study of the NH90 Block 2. This modernization will include key structural improvements, such as the integration of modular avionics, enhanced configuration homogeneity, improved maintenance and performance, as well as new capabilities in collaborative combat, connectivity, and human-machine cooperation. The study will be based on the high-level requirements defined by NAHEMA and the participating nations, alongside the European ENGRT (European Next Generation Rotorcraft Technologies) initiatives.
Continuity and Evolution of the Industrial Base
This biennial study will ensure industrial continuity by building on the achievements of the Block 1 program, while evolving the platform to meet the operational challenges of tomorrow. The goal is to provide critical technical elements that allow NAHEMA and the nations to assess and select the modernization options that best meet their long-term sovereign needs.
Operational Maturity and Future Prospects
The NH90 recently reached 500,000 flight hours, demonstrating its operational maturity and relevance. According to Matthieu Louvot, CEO of Airbus Helicopters, 'the Sea Tiger and the NH90 Standard 2 are establishing themselves as the leading benchmarks for naval and tactical operations. The signing of the Block 2 contract marks a decisive step to ensure that the NH90 remains at the forefront of European defense for decades to come.'
