Nokia and Lockheed Martin Launch Modular 5G Solution for Defense
Nokia Federal Solutions and Lockheed Martin have announced the launch of a modular, open-architecture 5G solution for the U.S. and allied defense forces. This capability is designed to provide secure and resilient communications, aligned with the open architecture standards of the Department of War (DoW) and its 'commercial-first' strategy.
A Hybrid Solution Integrating Commercial and Military 5G Technologies
The new solution incorporates Nokia's carrier-grade 5G within the DoD's open architecture framework, utilizing Command, Control, Communications, Computers, Cyber, Intelligence, Surveillance, Reconnaissance (C5ISR) / Modular Open Suite of Standards (CMOSS). This plug-and-play architecture reduces complexity, accelerates integration on expeditionary vehicles and systems, enhances interoperability, and allows the introduction of new capabilities without disrupting existing platforms. By combining Nokia's commercial 5G technologies with Lockheed Martin's 5G.MIL® solutions, the two companies deliver a hybrid network that enables mission-critical systems to connect via high-speed, cost-effective 5G while maintaining the security and resilience required by defense forces.
Alignment with Defense Standards and NATO Deployment
This approach, aligned with CMOSS, provides an additional pathway for integrating commercial 5G into allied platforms using a standardized modular framework applicable also outside the United States. As NATO nations integrate 5G into their mission systems, this solution offers a deployment-ready capability for military vehicles and platforms. The announcement marks a significant milestone following the Nokia and Lockheed Martin collaboration announced in 2025, which introduced the initial integration of Nokia's military 5G solutions with Lockheed Martin's Hybrid Base Station. The two companies are now moving beyond integration demonstrations to deliver a field-ready modular 5G capability.
