Orange Stock Leads the CAC 40 and Rebounds Above its 200-Day Moving Average
The telecom operator boosts the Parisian index in mid-morning trading, going against a nearly stagnant market. The rebound comes after several weeks of consolidation below short-term moving averages, amidst a resurgence of risk aversion related to energy.
A Rebound that Positions Orange at the Forefront of the CAC 40 Despite a Fragile Underlying Trend
Orange's stock rises 2.27% to €16.23, leading the CAC 40 while the Parisian index itself is up only 0.07%. The stock widens the gap with the rest of the pack, ahead of TotalEnergies (+1.65%) and Sanofi (+1.30%). Today's rebound occurs after a challenging phase: the stock is still down nearly 9% over one month and 9.6% over three months, despite a positive annual performance of nearly 25%.
Today's rebound occurs in a context of energy-related risk aversion, with Brent futures up about 4% at $79.11 following a new escalation between Washington and Tehran around the Strait of Hormuz, while defensive sectors like telecoms are historically sought after in these phases. The VIX rises by 8.2% to 16.26, without, however, penalizing defensive values like telecoms, which are historically sought after in these phases.
Technical Rebound from the 200-Day Moving Average with an RSI Exiting the Oversold Zone
Today's rebound is particularly evident in technical indicators. At €16.23, the price moves back above its 200-day moving average (€15.96) with a gap of 1.69%, while it remains below its 20-day moving average (€16.54) and significantly below its 50-day moving average (€17.43), at nearly 7% from the latter. The RSI at 31 has just exited the oversold zone, which makes the observed recovery on this Monday coherent.
The support at €15.70, a lower technical level monitored on the stock, was not breached during the recent decline. The next resistance is at €18.02, more than 10% above the current price. The next significant event for the stock is the publication of the semi-annual accounts, traditionally scheduled for the end of July.
