STMicroelectronics Launches ST54M, a Post-Quantum Secure Chip for Smartphones
The Franco-Italian group announced on Wednesday the launch of the ST54M, a secure chip featuring a hardware accelerator for post-quantum cryptography. This component is aimed at smartphone and mobile device manufacturers facing new security requirements in the quantum era.
A Hardware Accelerator to Anticipate Post-Quantum Standards
The ST54M integrates a single chip with an NFC controller, a secure element, and an eSIM, complemented by a hardware accelerator dedicated to post-quantum cryptography algorithms ML-KEM and ML-DSA. This architecture enables a gradual transition from hybrid cryptography to full post-quantum deployment. The product spans a wide range of applications: contactless payments, transport ticketing, access control, digital identity, driver's licenses, connectivity services, and digital car keys. The component is designed to protect against side-channel and fault injection attacks, while incorporating substantial memory capacity and an enhanced RF front-end to reduce antenna constraints and improve communication stability.

Samples of the ST54M are currently available for customers. Production and certification to the Common Criteria EUCC 2022 and EMVCo standards are expected by July 2026. STMicroelectronics considers this timeline sufficient to allow manufacturers to deploy implementations ready for the post-quantum era before regulatory requirements become mandatory, projected around 2030.
