STMicroelectronics launches VD56GA, infrared sensor for automotive cabin
The semiconductor manufacturer announced the launch of the VD56GA, an image sensor designed for infrared detection in vehicle cabins. The announcement highlights a focus on high-volume automotive platforms and system cost reduction.
A sensor for large-scale automotive programs
STMicroelectronics presented on September 14, 2026 the ST SafeSense VD56GA, a 1.1 MP automotive image sensor dedicated to infrared detection in the cabin. The component aims to help automakers (OEMs) and tier-1 suppliers deploy driver and occupant imaging assistance across all vehicle ranges.
According to the company, this positioning responds to the generalization of embedded detection, which now extends beyond premium platforms. The stated orientation is to reconcile imaging performance, compact integration, and cost structure suited to high-volume programs.
Front-end production at Crolles and integrated model
The sensor is based on a new backlit pixel architecture, designated ST DeepNIR, presented as offering 35% superior modulation transfer function and almost 60% higher quantum efficiency than the previous generation. It is offered in a 3.7 mm × 3.2 mm CSP package and integrates embedded image processing functions.
Front-end manufacturing of the VD56GA takes place at the Crolles site in France, with assembly carried out in Asia. STMicroelectronics reiterates its integrated device manufacturer model, which it links to supply chain resilience and long-term support for automotive programs. Samples are available now, with pricing accessible from local sales offices.
