Aperam Launches Optimized 316A Stainless Steel Grade
Aperam introduces a new austenitic stainless steel, grade 316A, designed as a cost-effective alternative to the performance equivalent grade 316L. The product, developed by Aperam Innovation Lab, is now available for commercialization.
Introduction of Grade 316A
Grade 316A is a certified and patented austenitic stainless steel, formulated to offer corrosion resistance and mechanical properties equivalent to grade 316L (1.4404). Its main advantage lies in an optimized alloy formulation that includes a reduction of more than 75% in molybdenum content, compensated by the addition of silicon. This composition allows for significant economic savings while maintaining a comparable level of corrosion resistance. According to Frederico Ayres Lima, CEO of Stainless Europe and Services & Solutions Europe, 'this grade establishes a new cost base for applications requiring corrosion resistance, with a reliable and immediately available solution.'
Seamless Integration into Production
Grade 316A is designed for immediate integration into production without modification of existing parameters, including for demanding deep drawing or forming operations. No tooling changes are required. The product is available in a wide dimensional range, from 0.06 mm to 15 mm in thickness and up to 2000 mm in width, in all surface aspects compliant with EN 10088-2 standard. Its composition includes a high content of recycled materials, contributing to compliance with European taxonomy requirements. Targeted applications include HVAC, food and cosmetic processing, architectural elements, transportation, water treatment and storage, as well as CCUS systems and electrolyzers.
