Atos Reappointed to Develop the Premier League Schedule for 2026-2027
Atos announced on Friday that it has orchestrated the creation of the Premier League schedule for the upcoming season, thus renewing a partnership that has been in place since the league's inception in 1992. The IT group combines algorithmic systems and human expertise to balance logistical, sporting, and operational constraints across 13,166 matches.
A Process Based on AI and Manual Expertise
Atos utilizes sophisticated computer systems to generate schedule scenarios, which are then manually refined by experts tasked with adhering to the strict rules set by the Premier League. These rules mandate, among other things, a balance of home and away matches over five games, no more than two consecutive matches in the same pattern, and consideration of local rivalries, police capacities, and fan travel requirements during sensitive periods (Boxing Day, New Year).
Glenn Thompson, a schedule compiler at Atos UK&I, explains that the process begins early in the year and spans about six months. He highlights the stressful nature of certain key moments, particularly several days dedicated to the manual verification of potential inconsistencies. 'It is impossible to please everyone; it's a compromise among all clubs without favoring any,' he states.
An Enhanced Presence in the Global Sports Ecosystem
Beyond the Premier League, Atos has maintained a Sports and Major Events division for over 30 years. This experience provides the group with the flexibility and technological excellence required for major international events. Michael Herron, director of Atos UK&I, asserts that 'for millions of fans, the release of the Premier League schedule marks the real beginning of a new season'.
Since late 2022, the group has held the status of official IT partner of UEFA for national team football. It has also recently entered into a partnership with CONMEBOL as the official innovation partner, focusing on South American domestic club football competitions. This trajectory strengthens Atos's position in the global sports ecosystem.
