CMB.TECH launches first ammonia-powered bulk carrier, 20 additional vessels expected by 2029
CMB.TECH announced on October 9, 2026 the departure of Mineral Europa, a 210,000 tonnes deadweight bulk carrier delivered in 2026, on its maiden voyage to Australia. The Antwerp-based shipowner presents it as the world's first ammonia-powered bulk carrier and makes it the first step in a fleet decarbonization strategy.
Eighteen bulk carriers, one container ship and two chemical tankers powered by ammonia
According to the press release, Mineral Europa is the first of a new generation of ammonia-powered vessels set to join CMB.TECH's fleet. In total, twenty-one vessels of this type are scheduled for delivery by 2029: eighteen bulk carriers, one container ship and two chemical tankers. The company indicates that most of these units should be delivered over the next nine months.
The group operates a combined fleet of approximately 235 vessels, which includes bulk carriers, tankers, chemical tankers, container ships and vessels dedicated to offshore energy. It also markets hydrogen and ammonia as fuels, sourced from its own production or from third-party producers.
"Mineral Europa is the first of its kind, but many others will follow in the months and years to come," said Alexander Saverys, chief executive officer of CMB.TECH. He noted that this launch comes "after nearly a decade of work".
Storage and bunkering barges to supply vessels
CMB.TECH indicated it is building the fuel ecosystem necessary for this transition. The company is investing in ammonia storage solutions and bunkering barges, so that this fuel can be delivered to ocean-going vessels.
According to the press release, green ammonia is produced from renewable electricity, water and air, and emits no CO2 when used in an engine. The company believes that, thanks to technological advances, it could become cheaper than diesel.
The group will publish its third quarter 2026 results on November 26, 2026.
