Dsm-firmenich turns to Chinese courts to defend its sclareol patent
Dsm-firmenich has turned to Chinese courts to defend a patent covering the biotechnological production of sclareol, an intermediate used in the manufacture of amber ingredients.

Dsm-firmenich has initiated a patent infringement action before the Xiong'An District Court in Hebei Province, China. The proceedings are directed against several Chinese entities, including a sclareol producer and a research institute. The legal petition concerns the use, according to the group, of its patent relating to the production of sclareol without authorization, described as an intermediate used in the manufacture of amber ingredients such as Ambrox Super. Cessation of use and compensation sought
Dsm-firmenich has asked the court to order the defendants to cease what it describes as unauthorized use and to pay compensation for the alleged infringement. According to Amaury Roquette, Executive Vice President Perfumery & Beauty Ingredients, the group relies on a portfolio of patents and expertise relating to sclareol and its derivatives, and indicates its intention to take necessary legal action to enforce its exclusive rights.
