IBA to Install Brazil's First Proton Therapy Center in Rio
IBA signed a contract on Thursday with the Fundação Severino Sombra (FUSVE), a Brazilian non-profit institution, to set up a Proteus One system in Rio de Janeiro. This project will establish Brazil's first national proton therapy center, focusing on pediatric cancer treatments.
A Cutting-edge System for the Brazilian Market
The contract includes the provision of a Proteus One system, IBA's most advanced compact proton therapy solution. The center will be located in Barra da Tijuca, in the western area of Rio de Janeiro. The project was developed in close scientific and technical partnership with the National Cancer Institute (INCA). A roadmap for the installation of a second treatment room is also planned prospectively.
FUSVE plans to start treating patients in the first half of 2030. The contract covers the supply of the system; a multi-year agreement for operation and maintenance will be signed later.
Strengthened Strategic Presence in Latin America
This new center will be the second proton therapy facility on the continent, both utilizing IBA technology. The contract represents a strategic milestone for the Belgian company, consolidating its leadership position in proton therapy and supporting its mission to make advanced cancer treatment technologies more accessible to patients globally.
This development is part of a recent commercial growth for IBA: the group notably won a contract in mid-June with the Duke University Health System to install two Proteus One systems in North Carolina, scheduled to be operational in 2029.
Contract Price and Features
The typical selling price of a Proteus One system including a multi-year maintenance contract ranges between 35 and 45 million euros. Olivier Legrain, CEO of IBA, expressed his honor in partnering with the Fundação Severino Sombra to help make proton therapy accessible to Brazilian patients. Gustavo Oliveira do Amaral, president of FUSVE, emphasized the choice of IBA as a partner rather than just a supplier, highlighting the group's leadership, proven clinical excellence especially in pediatrics, and IBA's commitment to institutions like FUSVE.
