La Française de l'Énergie Conducts the World's Deepest Hydrogen Drilling
La Française de l'Énergie (FDE) announces the successful completion of the PTH-2 drilling, the world's deepest dedicated to natural hydrogen, confirming significant presence of this resource in the Moselle subsoil. This breakthrough marks a strategic milestone for the group in the development of decarbonized hydrogen.
FDE has finalized the deep drilling of PTH-2 at a depth of 3,655 meters as part of the REGALOR II program, supported by the Grand Est Region and the European Union. The drilling confirmed the presence of natural hydrogen across many intervals of the Mosellan sedimentary basin, continuing the discovery made in Folschviller in 2023. During the operations, 58 surface samples were collected. The work has identified several zones of natural hydrogen presence and collected a complete set of geological data aimed at better understanding the formation and migration mechanisms of this low-carbon energy.

FDE will continue the scientific work of the REGALOR II program to measure the concentrations of dissolved hydrogen and to test, in situ, the separation tools developed in partnership with Solexperts, the GeoResources laboratory, and with the support of Saint-Gobain. Concurrently, the group is accelerating studies on the exclusive research permit of the 'Trois-Évêchés' (2,254 km²) to prepare for the next evaluation wells. By the end of April, the PTH-2 well will be equipped with the SYSMOG™ probe for in situ measurements, followed by the SYSPROG™ probe to test deep separation membranes. FDE aims to establish itself as a leading player in the exploration and production of natural hydrogen through a standardized approach. The group has also initiated discussions for research programs in Germany, Luxembourg, Pas-de-Calais, and is launching its evaluation in the United States in Kansas starting the second half of 2026.
