Meta Donates 15,000 Ray-Ban Glasses to Blind and Visually Impaired People in Ireland
The partnership around Ray-Ban Meta glasses is taking on a new dimension with a dedicated program for blind and visually impaired people in Ireland. The initiative is based on glasses developed in collaboration with EssilorLuxottica. It relies on Vision Ireland, the national charity organization of reference for vision loss.
Deployment Among 15,000 Blind and Visually Impaired People
Meta has announced the donation of 15,000 Ray-Ban Meta glasses to Vision Ireland, an Irish charity organization dedicated to vision loss. According to the press release, this volume corresponds to all blind and visually impaired adults followed by the organization. Ray-Ban Meta glasses are designed in collaboration with the European group EssilorLuxottica. The press release indicates that they should provide access to functions such as text reading, object identification, and access to information about the environment. Earlier this year, Vision Ireland co-organized a demonstration day for AI glasses at Meta's headquarters in Ireland, with hands-on sessions and a roundtable bringing together members of the organization and representatives from the blind and visually impaired community.
Phased Distribution and Training Funded by Meta
Eligible individuals can express their interest online via meta.vi.ie or by a dedicated phone number. Vision Ireland will manage a phased deployment, from application to evaluation, selection, then training and in-person support. Each pair comes with access to training funded by Meta, covering object identification, text reading, and voice-based task management for daily activities. Vision Ireland will organize events across the country for glasses distribution and will offer an assistance service for follow-up. According to the press release, Ireland hosts Meta's international headquarters and several sites, including the Reality Labs installation in Cork and the Clonee data center in County Meath.
