One of the strongest rises on the SBF 120: Alstom stock surges 5.5%
The rail manufacturer based in Saint-Ouen-sur-Seine is enjoying a strong trading session in a rising Paris market. The stock is recovering ground following a series of lows and moving back above several technical reference points monitored in recent weeks.
A jump that places the stock back above its 20 and 50-day moving averages
At 16.26 €, the Alstom stock gains 5.28% mid-morning, placing it among the strongest risers on the SBF 120, behind Medincell only. The CAC 40 advances 0.6% and the SBF 120 rises 0.66%: the stock is thus significantly outperforming the index. This rebound allows it to move back above its MA20 (15.30 €, representing a 6.27% gap) and its MA50 (15.88 €), after hitting a two-year low of 14.51 € on September 24. However, it remains 19% below its MA200 (20.09 €), a sign that the underlying downtrend has not yet reversed.
Over one week, the gain reaches 10.4%, but the stock still loses 27.4% over one year. The group recently multiplied commercial announcements. On September 29, it secured a €460 million contract for Riyadh's driverless metro and an order for 35 additional trains in Sweden. On October 1, its consortium was selected for the Gautrain in South Africa, on a scope of €800 million for Alstom.
Short positions at 5.07% of capital and a tense bond market
According to filed declarations, six funds cumulate a net short position of 5.07% of the capital, up 0.51 percentage points over thirty days. This level is high: some institutional investors remain positioned against the stock, either through a bearish bet or to hedge an exposure. In this case, a day of sharp gains can also be accompanied by share buybacks by some of these short sellers, though no precise intention can be drawn from this.
The context remains tense: the 10-year OAT stands at 4.90% according to the latest Banque de France reading, and the spread with the Bund reaches 1.47 points, its highest level since 2012. The company had moreover confirmed, when publishing Q1 2027 results on July 22, targeting organic growth of around 5% and adjusted operating margin close to 6.5% for the 2026/27 fiscal year. On the technical side, resistance at 16.91 € is the next level above the current price, with support at 14.54 € remaining the reference low point.
