Renault Aims for a 72% Reduction in Emissions by 2035 and Carbon Neutrality by 2050
On Thursday, Renault announced the renewal of its greenhouse gas emission reduction targets, endorsed by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). These targets continue the group's efforts since 2019, when it became a pioneer among automobile manufacturers.
2035 Goals and 2050 Net-Zero Trajectory
Renault commits to reducing emissions from its operations (scopes 1 and 2) by 72% by 2035 compared to 2019, as well as a 57% reduction in emissions related to the production and use of its products (scope 3) by the same deadline. The group also aims to achieve complete carbon neutrality by 2050 across its value chain. These SBTi-approved objectives rely on the progressive mobilization of the entire automotive chain, both upstream and downstream, as climate transition can only succeed collectively.
Levers of the futuREady Plan
The group's strategic futuREady plan frames the achievement of these targets through several concrete measures: the launch of sixteen new electric models, a 25% reduction in energy consumption per vehicle produced by 2030, and increasing the share of materials from the circular economy to 30%. Renault also plans to accelerate progress on batteries by improving their energy density (10 to 40% improvement by 2030) and developing recycling solutions. These targets are set on a progressive trajectory that takes into account the current conditions of the global automotive market and public policies, by mobilizing improvements in operational energy efficiency, the gradual evolution of the electric sales mix, and the value chain.
