Safran completes 931 segments of the ELT mirror by end of 2026, focusing on space and defense
Safran Reosc announced, in a press release published on October 6, 2026, that the production of 931 segments of the primary mirror (M1) of the Extremely Large Telescope (ELT) must be completed by the end of 2026 at its Poitiers site.
This telescope is being built on behalf of the European Southern Observatory (ESO).
The group presented this project as an industrial support point. According to the press release title, Safran intends to capitalize on this achievement to develop the production of optical equipment intended for space and defense.
The focus is thus on two specific markets: space optical equipment and defense optical equipment. The expertise acquired on the ESO telescope constitutes, in the group's presentation, the basis for this development.

Safran Reosc is a subsidiary of Safran Electronics & Defense. In addition to the primary mirror, the company produces the four other mirrors that make up the entire optical system of the giant telescope.
These four mirrors are produced at a second site, in Saint-Pierre-du-Perray, in Essonne. The program thus mobilizes two French industrial facilities of the subsidiary.
