Safran stock retreats more than 2% and threatens its support level at €322

Safran faces renewed downward pressure on Monday, with the CAC 40 also losing ground. The aerospace and defense engine manufacturer's stock is retesting a critical technical zone, as the global macroeconomic environment weighs heavier with a week of major monetary policy decisions ahead.

Safran stock retreats more than 2% and threatens its support level at €322

An intraday decline that brings the stock back to its support level at €322

Safran is down 2.24% to €322.80 during trading, ranking among the largest declines in the CAC 40, which is retreating 0.85%. This decline extends a downtrend that has been underway for several sessions: the stock has lost nearly 10% over one month, following an absolute peak of €361.90 in early August. The technical deterioration is clear. The price has fallen below the 20-day moving average at €340.25 (down -5.13%) and below the 50-day moving average at €341.38 (-5.44%), two moving averages that now offer resistance above the current price.

Only the 200-day moving average at €314.14 remains below, approximately 2.76% under current levels, forming a medium-term support floor. At €322.80, the stock is flirting with its identified support threshold at €322, already breached downward during the breakdown of the €328.70 support in early September. A sustained break below this level would reopen the path toward the 200-day moving average. The RSI at 41, in neutral territory but trending downward, does not signal frank oversold conditions at this stage, unlike what was observed Friday during the rebound at the top of the CAC 40.

Weighing macroeconomic context: persistent inflation and central banks in action this week

Safran's decline is part of a session marked by sharply elevated volatility, with the VIX surging more than 14% during trading. The week promises to be eventful on the monetary front: the Fed meets Wednesday, the Bank of England Thursday, and the Bank of Japan Friday. U.S. inflation at 3.4% year-over-year in August, slightly above expectations, strengthens the probability of a 25 basis point increase in U.S. policy rates. The ECB has already raised its rates on September 10, bringing its deposit facility to 2.50%.

This tightening of global financial conditions weighs on industrial stocks with high capital intensity, of which Safran is part. Moreover, tension on oil prices — Brent exceeding 107 dollars amid fresh Houthi attacks and the closure of Saudi Arabia's East-West pipeline — fuels inflationary concerns and reinforces uncertainty on costs for the aerospace sector. For the record, Safran and MBDA had secured the Thundart contract from the DGA on September 10, an anchor in terrestrial defense that fits into a diversification strategy, with no direct impact on today's movement. The support level at €322 now constitutes the reference point to monitor in the coming sessions.
