Société Générale stock falls 2.5%, among the steepest declines on the CAC 40
The La Défense-based bank retreats sharply during mid-session trading, as the CAC 40 index itself trends downward. The decline reflects a Monday marked by weekend social tensions and persistent pressure on French government debt.
A sharper decline than the index, below all three moving averages
Société Générale loses 2.59% to €62.80, while the CAC 40 falls 1.31%. In the index ranking, the stock is among the session's steepest declines. The retreat places it below all three moving averages: the gap stands at 6.3% from the 20-day MA (€67.02), 14.8% from the 50-day MA, and 13.2% from the 200-day MA.
The price is also approaching its support level at €62.50, within 0.5% distance, a threshold worth monitoring closely after a one-month decline of 12.5%. The RSI at 35 reflects the erosion underway for several weeks. A dividend interim payment of €0.75 was detached on October 5: the monthly and quarterly performances cited account for the coupon.

The CAC 40 retreats this Monday following violence that occurred Saturday in several cities, which revives concerns about public finances. Banks are among the sectors most affected. The ten-year OAT yield stood at 4.79% according to the latest Bank of France reading (October 16), 1.37 percentage points above the Bund, or 11 basis points below the 4.90% peak reached on October 1. On the fundamentals side, the group published half-yearly results on July 30, with group net income reaching €3.5 billion, up 13.9%.
It had then raised its 2026 return on equity (ROTE) target to approximately 11% and announced an exceptional share buyback of €1.5 billion. At €62.80, the stock is trading at approximately 7.9 times current fiscal year earnings, according to the consensus of surveyed analysts. The €62.50 zone remains the closest technical level.
