Solvay Adjusts Soda Production Capacity in Torrelavega
Solvay, in a statement released on February 23, 2026, announces a reduction in soda production capacity at its Spanish site in Torrelavega. This decision is in response to challenging global market conditions, characterized by persistent oversupply and high energy costs in Europe.
Starting from the third quarter of 2026, pending the required consultation, Solvay will reduce the soda production capacity of the Torrelavega site in Spain from 600 kilotonnes to 420 kilotonnes. The company justifies this measure by the need to enhance the competitiveness of its global assets in the face of global oversupply and high energy and carbon costs in Europe. The sodium bicarbonate operations are not affected. According to Etienne Galan, president of Solvay Soda Ash & Derivatives division, this reduction is part of a transformation strategy in the sector, including the deployment of carbon-free soda processes in the group's energy transition trajectory.

The supply to customers remains guaranteed through the site and Solvay's global network.
