STMicroelectronics and National University of Singapore Launch Dedicated Edge AI Laboratory
STMicroelectronics and the National University of Singapore (NUS) have officially launched the ST-NUS HELIX Corporate Lab, a joint research initiative dedicated to edge AI technologies. The partnership combines the expertise of the semiconductor manufacturer with that of the Singaporean university over a period of four years.
A Four-Year Joint Research Initiative
On August 24, 2026 in Singapore, STMicroelectronics (NYSE: STM) and the National University of Singapore launched the ST-NUS HELIX Corporate Lab, a four-year strategic research initiative devoted to the next generation of edge AI technologies. HELIX, an acronym for Hardware for Embodied Low-power Intelligent Xcceleration, aims to enable new use cases for generative and physical artificial intelligence, with innovations spanning from system level to silicon.
The laboratory benefits from support of the Research, Innovation and Enterprise 2025 (RIE2025) plan. It is hosted at the College of Design and Engineering, with participation from the School of Computing.
Research on Memory-Centric Architectures and Silicon
Under the agreement, researchers from NUS and STMicroelectronics will work jointly on research initiatives, talent development, intellectual property creation and demonstration activities. The research will focus on memory-centric architectures, in-memory computing and scalable compute-and-memory systems.
This work will leverage ST's P18 18 nm FD-SOI technology and embedded phase-change memory (PCM). ST will also provide NUS with a dedicated design platform, implemented in its proprietary P18 18 nm FD-SOI technology.
Nurturing Talent for Singapore's Ecosystem
The laboratory was officially launched by Ms Low Yen Ling, Senior Minister of State serving at the Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth and the Ministry of Trade and Industry, as guest of honour.
According to the partners, HELIX is intended to strengthen local research capabilities and foster a new generation of talent in AI systems and chip design. Students, researchers and professionals will have the opportunity to participate in projects conducted by the laboratory.
