STMicroelectronics Introduces Stellar P3E, an Automotive Microcontroller with AI Accelerator
STMicroelectronics announces the launch of the Stellar P3E, touted as the first automotive microcontroller to integrate an AI accelerator for embedded intelligence. The component aims to simplify multifunctional integration in software-defined vehicles.
High Performance and Embedded AI in a Single Device
The Stellar P3E combines high-performance real-time control and embedded artificial intelligence in a single device. It incorporates ST's Neural-ART Accelerator, a dedicated Neural Processing Unit (NPU) designed for real-time AI efficiency. According to STMicroelectronics, the component delivers inference processing speeds on the order of microseconds, with up to 30 times more efficiency than traditional processor cores. The microcontroller also features ST's proprietary integrated memory, xMemory, based on phase-change memory (PCM) technology, offering twice the density of traditional embedded flash memory. These capabilities are intended to support applications such as predictive maintenance, intelligent sensing via virtual sensors, and optimization of electric vehicle charging.
Supported by the Edge AI Suite from ST
The Stellar P3E is supported by ST's Edge AI Suite, an embedded AI ecosystem covering everything from dataset creation to application deployment. The microcontroller benefits from integration into Stellar Studio, the development environment designed for automotive engineers, as well as support from the NanoEdge AI Studio tool now available for the Stellar family. Production start is scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2026.
