STMicroelectronics Launches Next-Generation UWB Chip for Automotive and AI

Introduction of the ST64UWB Family

STMicroelectronics announces the launch of the ST64UWB family, presented as the first system-on-chip integrating the ultra-wideband specification IEEE 802.15.4ab with narrowband radio assistance. This strategic move targets automotive, consumer, and industrial applications, including secure digital access, presence and motion detection, and precise approach detection. The IEEE 802.15.4ab standard introduces technical improvements over the previous generation IEEE 802.15.4z, notably by extending operational range and enhancing connections with devices carried in pockets or bags. The new specification also improves radar capabilities, particularly for child presence detection in vehicles.

Components of the ST64UWB Family

This family comprises three integrated circuits: ST64UWB-A100, ST64UWB-A500, and ST64UWB-C100. The ST64UWB-A series, aimed at automotive applications, is based on an Arm Cortex-M85 core and supports the ASIL A(B) automotive safety concept. The ST64UWB-A500 model adds artificial intelligence acceleration and digital signal processing for AI-powered radar applications, such as child presence detection and parking sensor applications. The ST64UWB-C100, based on an Arm Cortex-M85 core, targets commercial and consumer applications with full compatibility with the Aliro standard. The chips are currently in the sampling phase with major OEMs and original equipment manufacturers. STMicroelectronics also offers a comprehensive development suite including the UWB stack, a radar toolkit, development boards, and reference designs for antennas.
