DSM-Firmenich: FDA Approves PARSOL Shield, Paving the Way for a New Generation of Sunscreens
DSM-Firmenich announced on Wednesday the U.S. FDA approval of bemotrizinol (brand PARSOL Shield), the first new active sunscreen ingredient approved in the United States in over 25 years. This approval paves the way for a new generation of UV protection formulas for sunscreen product manufacturers.
A New Active Ingredient for American Sunscreen Protection
DSM-Firmenich has announced the FDA's approval of bemotrizinol (PARSOL Shield) for the American market, under the modernized GRASE (Generally Recognized as Safe and Effective) and MUsT (Maximal Usage Trial) standards. The group emphasizes that this is the first new active sunscreen ingredient approved in the U.S. in more than 25 years. This molecule was already approved in several regions of the world before.
Efficacy and Tolerance Demonstrated in Clinical Studies
Clinical studies conducted on PARSOL Shield involved nearly 500 participants representative of the American demographic diversity. They demonstrate exceptional UV efficacy, excellent tolerance, and a positive safety profile. The ingredient offers broad-spectrum protection and operates at low concentrations, features that DSM-Firmenich presents as favorable for a better environmental profile.
Benefits for Formulators and Consumers
For sunscreen product manufacturers, PARSOL Shield enables the development of lighter, silkier sunscreen textures, with good photostability and increased formulation flexibility. The group specifies that this ingredient also facilitates the creation of standardized global sunscreen formulas, reducing formulation complexity and accelerating market entry for its clients. Parand Salmassinia, President of the Beauty & Care division at DSM-Firmenich, stated that this approval 'fills a void of innovation for more than two decades' in the American sunscreen market.
