Valbiotis: EU Moves Towards Banning Red Yeast Rice Monacolins
Member states of the European Union have voted in favor of a draft regulation to ban monacolins derived from red yeast rice in dietary supplements. According to Valbiotis, this regulatory development strengthens the relevance of the company's positioning in cardiometabolic prevention, particularly with ValbiotisPRO Cholesterol, formulated without monacolin K or red yeast rice.
European Vote Against Red Yeast Rice Monacolins
On May 13, member states gathered within the SCoPAFF, the Standing Committee on Plants, Animals, Food and Feed, voted in favor of the draft regulation presented by the European Commission to ban monacolins from red yeast rice. These substances had been under review for several years by European regulatory authorities due to safety concerns. In a scientific opinion published in 2018, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) concluded that serious adverse effects could occur even at low levels of intake. Based on this, the European Commission adopted restrictive measures concerning the use of monacolins in the European Union in 2022.
Possible Publication in October 2026
The text must still pass through several institutional stages before it comes into effect. It includes a three-month review period by the European Parliament and the Council, before approval by the European Commission and publication in the Official Journal of the European Union. According to the timeline presented by Valbiotis, the regulation could be published in October 2026. It would then come into effect 20 days after its publication. A transitional period would allow the sale of existing stocks for products already on the market before the new provisions come into force, until October 2027.
Valbiotis Highlights Its Lipidrive Ingredient
Valbiotis believes that this regulatory change reinforces the relevance of its scientific approach to preventing cardiometabolic imbalances. The company particularly highlights ValbiotisPRO Cholesterol, a solution developed without monacolin K or red yeast rice. The product is based on Lipidrive, a proprietary active ingredient of 100% natural origin, resulting from over ten years of research and development. According to studies conducted by Valbiotis, this solution has demonstrated effectiveness in reducing LDL cholesterol within six weeks, in a double-blind placebo-controlled clinical trial involving 340 participants.
