Valeo Launches Its 48V Two-Speed Electric Axle, Chosen by Dacia
Valeo announced on Wednesday the commercial launch of its 48V two-speed electric axle, equipped with a software-controlled dog clutch. This solution, developed in collaboration with Renault Group, has been selected by Dacia to power its new Duster, Bigster, and Striker models under the name 'Hybrid-G 150 4x4'.
The 48V two-speed eAxle addresses the rising costs associated with emissions that burden traditional 4x4s. By replacing mechanical components with electric propulsion, this technology offsets the higher fuel consumption of classic 4x4 systems to meet European emission standards while maintaining affordability.
Xavier Dupont, General Manager of Valeo's Power Division, states: 'This disruptive technology reconciles the iconic 4x4 DNA of the Duster with a significant reduction in CO₂ emissions.'

Traditionally, affordable electric axles force a choice between low-speed torque and high-speed energy efficiency. Valeo's solution overcomes this dilemma through a two-speed architecture: in low gear, the system develops a maximum torque of 1,800 Nm to the rear wheels, providing the off-road performance expected for steep ascents and extreme terrains. In high gear, it smoothly transitions to efficient driving up to 140 km/h.
The 'Smart Dog' innovation uses a software-controlled dog clutch, allowing for top performances to be combined with a cost suited to entry-level vehicles.
