Viridien stock swimming against the tide of the SBF 120, weighed down by Brent below $100
Brent is falling below $100 on Tuesday, and the French geosciences specialist is paying a heavy price for its direct exposure to oil prices. In an SBF 120 that is advancing slightly, Viridien stands out as an exception on the downside, while short positions on the stock remain at one of the highest levels on the market.
A decline of 2.55% places Viridien among the SBF 120's biggest losers
The stock is falling 2.55% to €91.80 during the session, in a Paris market that is nevertheless oriented upward (CAC 40: +0.26%, SBF 120: +0.27%). This counter-trend places Viridien among the biggest declines of the SBF 120. Brent is falling back to $99.04 per barrel (-1.30% during the session), extending a 8% decline over the past week, which mechanically weighs on a value whose geosciences activity is directly indexed to petroleum exploration budgets. Despite this setback today, the medium-term dynamic remains positive: the stock is still gaining nearly 5% over seven days and is up more than 51% over one year.
Short positions climb to 7.83% of capital, a high level that warrants attention
According to filed declarations, nine funds hold a cumulative net short position of 7.83% of Viridien's capital, up 1.54 percentage points over thirty days (compared to 6.29% a month ago). This level, substantially higher than the 3% threshold generally considered significant, testifies to persistent institutional selling pressure on the stock. These positions do not necessarily reveal a negative conviction about the company's intrinsic value: they may also reflect hedging strategies for oil sector exposure.
Nevertheless, this rapid increase in cumulative short positions deserves to be viewed in light of the technical configuration: the price remains above its 20-day moving average (€89.07, +3.07% spread) and its 50-day moving average (€87.93, +4.40% spread), but remains clearly below its 200-day moving average at €107.98 (nearly 15% below). The support level at €82.60 constitutes the next downside reference point to watch if short pressure were to intensify.
