Volta Finance: -0.4% return in September as CLO equity tranches weigh
Volta Finance published its September monthly report on 29 October 2026, showing a net return of -0.4%. Over the same period, US and European high-yield markets fell by 2.5% and 1.8% respectively.
Morningstar leveraged loan indices, meanwhile, rose by 0.2% in the United States and 0.3% in Europe. The listed vehicle, whose portfolio is managed by BNP Paribas Asset Management Europe, ended the month with a net asset value of €243.5 million, or €6.66 per share.
The breakdown by asset class shows two opposing trajectories: CLO debt tranches delivered a performance of +0.4%, while CLO equity tranches fell by 1.8%.
CLO debt at +0.4%, CLO equity tranches at -1.8% over the month
The monthly return of -0.4% results from these two contributions moving in opposite directions. According to the management company, these performances by asset class are calculated using the Dietz method, incorporating the market valuation at the end of the period and cash flows received, excluding currency effects.
The fund manager places this month in a context of reassessment of inflation and monetary policy expectations. Rising oil prices and renewed tensions in the Middle East have, in his view, made the market environment more volatile.
The ECB raised its deposit rate by 25 basis points, while the US Federal Reserve carried out its first rate hike since 2023. Long-term US Treasury yields reached multi-year highs.
According to BNP Paribas Asset Management Europe, credit markets remained relatively orderly, with limited widening of credit spreads. For structured credit, the fund manager describes a month marked less by a deterioration in fundamentals than by the combination of energy-related inflation risk and a more restrictive monetary policy.
€7.3 million invested in three European CLO tranches rated B
During the month, the fund acquired €7.3 million of three European CLO tranches rated B, at spreads of around 1,000 basis points. It also took three minority positions in CLO equity, following the decline in loan prices.
Volta Finance is also a minority shareholder in a CLO restructured during the period. The fund chose to contribute its share of the additional equity capital required by the transaction, while obtaining a rebate of 10 basis points on the management fees applied to the newly injected equity.
In terms of positioning, the fund manager indicates that he continues to seek investment opportunities in CLO equity, while maintaining a larger allocation to CLO mezzanine tranches given the level of uncertainty in the markets. He stresses that he remains highly selective in choosing managers of the underlying portfolios.
€33.4 million in liquidity and €19.9 million in interest income received over six months
At the end of September 2026, the fund held approximately €33.4 million in cash and cash equivalents. The fund manager presents this reserve as capacity to deploy capital should opportunities arise during periods of volatility.
Over the last six months, Volta Finance received approximately €19.9 million in interest income, which represents close to 16% of the latest net asset value on an annualised basis. This income flow is central to the fund's objectives: preserving its capital throughout the credit cycle and paying a stable income through quarterly dividends.
Approximately 1.02% of the net asset value consists of investments whose end-of-month valuation is only available after publication. They are valued on the basis of the last known value, a proportion that stood at 1.00% as of 31 August 2026 and at 0.02% as of 30 June 2026.
As of 30 September 2026, the net asset value of Volta Finance stood at €243.5 million, or €6.66 per share.
