Waga Energy: Third and Final Unit Delivered to Casella in Pennsylvania
The French biomethane producer has commissioned a unit at the McKean waste storage facility in Mount Jewett, Pennsylvania, alongside Casella Waste Systems (Nasdaq: CWST). This milestone marks a partnership based on a long-term ownership and operation model for the facilities.
McKean, Third Unit Commissioned with Casella This Year
Waga Energy and Casella Waste Systems announced on September 3, 2026, the commissioning of a biomethane production unit at the McKean waste storage facility in Mount Jewett, Pennsylvania. The McKean unit is the third commissioned this year as part of the partnership with Casella, following the Chemung County and Hyland sites. With this installation, Waga Energy completes the program concluded in 2023. The equipment relies on the Wagabox technology, developed and patented by Waga Energy, to recover gas emitted from storage sites in the form of biomethane injected into gas networks. The unit can process 3,200 m³/h of raw gas and produce up to 120 GWh of renewable gas annually, with progressive ramp-up.
Full Financing and Twenty-Year Operation by Waga Energy
The biomethane produced at the site is injected directly into the National Fuel Gas network. According to Environmental Protection Agency standards, the project should prevent the emission of 31,000 tonnes of CO₂ equivalent per year. Under the terms of the agreement, Waga Energy has fully financed the construction of each unit, which it will own and operate for twenty years. Casella and Waga Energy share revenues from the sale of biomethane. Waga Energy currently operates 38 biomethane production units in France, Spain, Canada, and the United States, representing an installed capacity of 2.1 TWh per year. The company currently has 19 units under construction worldwide.
