X-FAB launches Fab4Micro construction in Erfurt, supported with €127.4 million
The specialized semiconductor foundry broke ground on the Fab4Micro project on October 5, 2026, in the presence of representatives from government, industry and academia.
This project continues the transformation of the German Erfurt site into a microsystems hub for the X-FAB group.
Increased capacity for microsystems and photonics
Through its subsidiary X-FAB MEMS Foundry GmbH, the group is expanding its manufacturing capabilities for highly integrated microsystems and photonic solutions. According to the press release, the Fab4Micro project provides a foundation for industrial-scale production of these technologies.
The new facility is intended to meet growing demand from the automotive, industrial and medical markets, which are the group's primary outlets. X-FAB also indicates that it should contribute to strengthening European sovereignty in semiconductor technologies.
Public funding of €127.4 million under the Chips Act
The Fab4Micro project benefits from total funding of €127.4 million. This support is provided by the German federal government and the Free State of Thuringia, under the European semiconductor regulation (EU Chips Act).
On the federal side, support comes from the Ministry of Economy and Energy, based on a Bundestag decision. On the regional side, it falls under the Ministry of Economy, Agriculture and Rural Areas of Thuringia.
"Today's ceremony marks an important milestone for X-FAB and underscores our long-term commitment to innovation, growth and support for our customers worldwide," said Gabriel Kittler, site manager for Erfurt. Mario Voigt, Minister-President of Thuringia, and Marion Walsmann, Member of the European Parliament, participated in the ceremony.
Listed on Euronext Paris since April 2017, X-FAB employs approximately 4,000 people. The group operates six wafer fabrication plants, located in Malaysia, Germany, France and the United States.
