Airbus Launches LEIA Project for Hybrid-Electric Aircraft, Ground Demonstration Set for 2027
Airbus has announced the initiation of the LEIA project (Large Scale Integration Demonstrator of Hybrid Electrical Architecture), aimed at developing a hybrid electric architecture for the next generation of short and medium-haul aircraft. Supported by the European Union's Clean Aviation initiative, this program marks a key milestone in integrating high-voltage generation and distribution technologies for innovative electrical systems.
A Demonstrator to Validate Hybrid Electric Architecture
The LEIA project continues from the SWITCH program, which focused on hybrid-electric propulsion subsystems and reached a significant milestone in July with the completion of integrated lab tests by Collins Aerospace. These subsystems, developed in collaboration with Pratt & Whitney, GKN Aerospace, and MTU Aero Engines, are now transitioning to the Airbus Sustainable Technology and Engineering Projects (STEP) laboratory in Ottobrunn, Germany. There, Airbus teams will conduct critical aircraft-level integration tests, covering design, battery interfacing, and energy management systems. The LEIA project aims to bridge the gap between component-level innovation and aircraft-level maturity, preparing these technologies for future integration and certification.
Comprehensive Testing in 2027 to Validate Electrical Systems
Airbus is leading the integration of a suite of advanced electrical components, including scalable motor-generators, next-generation electronic controllers, and power distribution equipment. These systems will be validated through a comprehensive testing program, culminating in a decisive ground demonstration in 2027. The manufacturer is collaborating on LEIA with AVL, Collins Aerospace, the European Aeronautics Science Network (EASN), Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft, Liebherr Aerospace, Lynxeo, the Dutch Aerospace Center (NLR), Safran, SAFT, the University of Warwick, and the Wroclaw University of Technology. This mobilization reflects the group's ambition to transform aviation towards a more electric future and to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
