ArcelorMittal Launches Three Renewable Projects in India for $900 Million
Steel manufacturer ArcelorMittal has announced the launch of three new renewable energy projects in India, with a total nominal capacity of 1 GW. These facilities, which combine solar, wind, and battery storage, are expected to be operational between 2027 and 2028.
Project Details and Investment
The three projects represent a total investment of $900 million, according to the press release. The first, located in Amaravati, Maharashtra, includes 36 MW of solar capacity and is expected to be completed in the first half of 2027. The second project, in Bikaner, Rajasthan, combines 400 MW of solar with 500 MWh of battery storage, with commissioning scheduled for the first half of 2028. The third, located in Bachau, Gujarat, combines 250 MW of wind, 300 MW of solar, and 300 MWh of integrated storage, also expected in the first half of 2028. Once completed, these projects will increase ArcelorMittal's renewable capacity in India to 2 GW, doubling the current level, and the global capacity of the group to 3.3 GW.
Energy Supply and CO2 Savings
The electricity generated by these three facilities will be supplied to AMNS India, a steel joint venture owned 60% by ArcelorMittal and 40% by Nippon Steel, the company states. The annual CO2 savings are expected to be 40,000 tonnes for the Amaravati project, 650,000 tonnes for the Bikaner project, and 900,000 tonnes for the Bachau project. Additionally, AMNS India is also developing its own renewable project in Bachau, similar in size with 550 MW comprising 300 MW of solar and 250 MW of wind, with comparable CO2 savings of 900,000 tonnes annually.
Overall Impact and Future Plans
Including ArcelorMittal's first Indian project of 1 GW, commissioned this year, and all ongoing projects, the renewable installations are expected to generate total annual CO2 savings of 4 million tonnes, according to the group. They will cover 35% of the electricity needs of AMNS India's steel operations in Hazira, based on the energy consumption expected in 2028, following the ongoing expansion that will increase production capacity to 15 million tonnes of steel per year. ArcelorMittal is also developing renewable projects in Brazil and Argentina, bringing its total electricity production capacity to 3.3 GW once all projects are operational.
