Atos Selected by ESA to Build the Digital Twin of Earth
Atos has been appointed by the European Space Agency to launch competitions aimed at developing the DestinE ecosystem, a digital twin of Earth driven by the European Commission. Following the first call for tenders, twelve providers have been selected to deliver advanced applications and services on the platform.
Launching the DestinE Ecosystem
Atos has been mandated by the European Space Agency (ESA) to initiate competitions for the development of the DestinE ecosystem. This flagship initiative is led by the European Commission and implemented jointly by ESA, the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF), and the European Organisation for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites (EUMETSAT). The goal is to create a highly accurate digital twin of Earth to assist public decision-makers, researchers, and innovators in simulating, monitoring, and better understanding natural phenomena and human activity.
Selection of Innovative Service Providers
Following the initial call for competition, 12 innovative service providers were selected to provide Advanced Applications and Services (AAS) on the DestinE platform. Some of these services are now fully operational. These include CALIFE (developed by Murmuration), which makes Earth observation data accessible at a hyper-local scale; HARVIC (GeoVille), aimed at monitoring the development of potato crops; Hi-Rest LST (OHB Digital Services), providing precise thermal analyses at 30 meters resolution; COMEO (VisioTerra), optimizing the use of Earth observation data through compression; and the Desert Locust Monitoring Service (Sistema), designed to mitigate the impacts of desert locusts.
Key Activities for 2024
The Atos consortium, including Atos, Mews Partners, and ACRI-ST, has been entrusted in 2024 with carrying out four key activities essential to the success of DestinE. Valérie Dehlinger, Director of Aerospace, Automotive, Chemicals, Manufacturing, Energy & Utilities, Retail, Telecoms, Media & Technology, and Transport markets at Atos in France, stated: 'We are pleased to support ESA's efforts to advance the DestinE ecosystem and digital innovation in Earth observation, and to play a key role in the future of DestinE, developing its appeal among a diverse array of stakeholders across Europe.' The DestinE platform is co-funded by the European Union.
