Maurel et Prom share falls 2%, bucking CAC 40 and Brent trends
In a Paris market that nevertheless closes in positive territory, Maurel et Prom stands out as an exception on the downside this Wednesday, September 16. The hydrocarbon producer retreats even as Brent surpasses 105 dollars per barrel, in a context of geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.
A 2% decline that contrasts with an SBF 120 in positive territory and a well-oriented Brent
Maurel et Prom closes the session at 8.33 €, down 2% from the previous day's close of 8.50 €, ranking among the steepest declines of the SBF 120 at end of day. The movement stands out in an otherwise favorable environment for the oil sector: Brent trades at 105.92 dollars per barrel, driven since early September by geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, notably the closure of Saudi Arabia's East-West pipeline following a drone attack and the tightening of traffic around the Strait of Hormuz. The SBF 120 for its part finishes up 0.65% at close, making the stock's decline all the more notable.
Over the week, the share remains just in positive territory with a gain of 0.85%, and shows a progression of 2.52% over one month. Over one year, performance remains very solid at +76.26%, reflecting the strong revaluation of the share since end of 2025 levels.
Moving averages still breached, but the RSI begins to ease from peaks
Despite today's decline, Maurel et Prom maintains a still constructive technical configuration. The price at 8.33 € remains above its three moving averages: MA20 at 8.17 € (spread +1.96%), MA50 at 8.10 € (+2.84%) and MA200 at 8.14 € (+2.33%). This triple moving average cushion constitutes a short-term floor, particularly as the main support is identified much lower, at 7.71 €. The RSI at 60 reflects a still positive dynamic, without reaching the clear overbought zone, which leaves room before any tension on the share.
On the other hand, the 8.65 € resistance level has not been breached and continues to cap rebound attempts. According to the consensus of surveyed analysts, the share trades at approximately 7.1 times current fiscal year earnings and 8.2 times next fiscal year's earnings, a measured valuation given the share's twelve-month stock market performance. The next technical test to watch remains the breach of the 8.65 € resistance level.
