TotalEnergies Launches MethaneLive to Track Real-Time Methane Leaks
At VivaTech, TotalEnergies introduces MethaneLive, a global real-time methane emissions monitoring center based on data utilization and advanced algorithms. This tool is part of the company's strategy to achieve near-zero methane emissions at its operated upstream sites by 2030.
A Real-Time Monitoring System Already Operational
MethaneLive relies on a network of 13,000 sensors to be deployed by 2025 across all TotalEnergies' operated upstream sites, both onshore and offshore. Since its launch in early 2026, the center has been analyzing data generated by these sensors in real time using advanced digital tools and the expertise of its teams, enabling alerts to operators, identification of anomalies, and recommendation of corrective actions. According to the company, MethaneLive has detected 35 fugitive methane emissions across several facilities since its inception, leaks that are difficult to identify without real-time analysis, and has enabled their correction through targeted maintenance operations. TotalEnergies claims to be the only player in the sector to have deployed such a system on its operated assets.
AI and Data at the Heart of the Energy Transition
MethaneLive exemplifies TotalEnergies' broader approach to deploying data and artificial intelligence across the company. Currently, about 3,000 pieces of equipment are monitored across all the group's assets. AI systems analyze the data to detect weak signals indicating potential failures, allowing teams to anticipate maintenance operations and improve facility availability. To support these investments in data and computing, TotalEnergies announces the deployment of Pangea 5, a next-generation supercomputer that will increase its computing power by sixfold. From 2027, this equipment will meet the growing digital needs, optimize computing times, and deepen the understanding of complex phenomena in subsurface, electricity, and renewables.
Partnerships and Collaborations to Extend AI Capabilities
Since VivaTech 2025, TotalEnergies has signed two data partnerships with Emerson and Cognite to bring real-time data from all its sites, structure it, and make it accessible to teams via dedicated platforms. The company is also collaborating with Mistral AI on a joint innovation lab, with the first use cases focusing on refinery performance analysis and the exploitation of large volumes of technical data for exploration and production.
