Airbus Helicopters Secures Contract for 12 Helicopters in Romania
On Wednesday, Airbus Helicopters signed a contract with the Romanian Ministry of Interior for the acquisition of 12 multi-role helicopters. This order is part of the European Security Action for Europe (SAFE) program, aimed at enhancing the continent's civil protection capabilities and emergency response.
Seven H160 and Five H145 to Modernize Romanian Air Fleet
The contract includes seven H160 helicopters and five H145s. The seven H160s will be divided according to two missions: four will be dedicated to civil protection and disaster management, while three will support law enforcement, aerial surveillance, and tactical security operations. The five H145s will be fully allocated to the Romanian emergency rescue service (SMURD) and mountain rescue operations, serving as the primary resource for rapid emergency medical interventions, specialized medical evacuations, and search and rescue (SAR) operations.
Two Models Combining Operational Versatility and Environmental Efficiency
The H145 remains the most widespread model in the family, with over 1,800 units in operation worldwide, accumulating more than 8.5 million flight hours. Equipped with two Safran Arriel 2E engines and the digital Helionix avionic suite, it features a four-axis autopilot and remains the quietest helicopter in its class. The H160 represents a more technologically advanced generation, equipped with the Helionix system and designed with a focus on operational safety, extended range, and livability. Its innovative Blue Edge main rotor blades and inclined Fenestron tail rotor reduce perceived noise by up to 50% compared to conventional designs. Equipped with Safran Arrano engines, the H160 shows an 18% reduction in fuel consumption.
Airbus Helicopters' Presence in Romania for Over Twenty Years
Airbus has been operating in Romania for over twenty years through three activities: an Airbus Helicopters customer center, which has achieved about 75% of its revenue from exports since its inception, Airbus Defence and Space providing turnkey secure communication services and system engineering, and a commercial aircraft spare parts manufacturing activity.
