Alstom signs with Vingroup for up to 83 metro cars destined for Hanoi
The agreement signed on October 6, 2026 in Hanoi combines an order manufactured in France with a technology license that will allow Vingroup to assemble 117 additional cars in Vietnam. Its accounting by Alstom is expected at the close of financing.
Manufacturing distributed across six sites in France and Belgium
Alstom and Vietnamese group Vingroup, through its subsidiary Vinhomes, have concluded an agreement concerning the design, manufacture and supply of up to 83 Metropolis cars with five carriages, intended for metro projects in Hanoi. The cars will be designed and manufactured at the Valenciennes Petite-Forêt site, which the group presents as its center of expertise dedicated to metros.
Five other Alstom sites will participate in the project: Ornans for motors, Le Creusot for bogies, Charleroi for traction systems, Toulouse for electrical diagram design and Villeurbanne for on-board IT and passenger information systems.
The agreement was signed at Vingroup's headquarters, in the presence of Martin Sion, Chief Executive Officer of Alstom, and Didier Le Bret, French Ambassador to Vietnam.
117 cars assembled in Vietnam from Alstom components
The second part of the agreement is a technology license aimed at supporting the assembly of 117 additional cars in Vietnam. These cars will be assembled by Vingroup from components supplied by Alstom.
For Vingroup, this partnership is part of a strategy aimed at making infrastructure a "new strategic pillar", according to Nguyen Viet Quang, Vice President and Chief Executive Officer of the group. He specified that the agreement should enable Vietnam to "progressively develop skills associated" with railway technologies.
Alstom indicates that the accounting of the agreement is expected at the close of financing.
Hanoi aims for an urban rail network of 979 kilometers by 2045
The agreement comes within the framework of the capital's Master Plan, which provides for developing by 2045 an urban rail network of 979 kilometers composed of 18 lines. Martin Sion described this agreement as a "major milestone for Alstom" in this market.
Present in Vietnam for more than 30 years, Alstom has already supplied and integrated the system for Hanoi metro line 3, comprising ten Metropolis cars with four carriages designed and manufactured in France, the Urbalis 400 signaling system, electrical power supply and depot equipment. The group has also modernized signaling and telecommunications for phases 1 and 2 of the Hanoi-Vinh regional line and equipped Ninh Binh station.
