IBA to equip a proton therapy center in Rome, a first in southern Italy
Belgian group IBA has been selected following a public tender by the Istituti Fisioterapici Ospitalieri & Istituto Nazionale Tumori Regina Elena (IFO) to equip a cancer treatment center in Rome. The facility aims to provide access to proton therapy for patients in central and southern Italy, a technology previously absent from this part of the country.
A compact Proteus ONE system with rotating gantry for Rome
IBA announced on September 29, 2026 the signing of a contract with the IFO for the supply of a proton therapy solution in Rome. The group was selected along with its partners Cecchini SRL and Gowen SRL, members of the temporary grouping of companies (RTI), to deliver a compact Proteus ONE system equipped with a rotating gantry within the Istituti Fisioterapici Ospitalieri center.
This center will be the first proton therapy system with a rotating gantry available in central and southern Italy. The IFO will offer proton therapy treatments to pediatric and adult patients, and plans to welcome its first patients in 2030.

The contract covers the supply of the Proteus ONE proton therapy system, the design of the center, its construction, the installation of the system, a comprehensive training program as well as a one-year operation and maintenance agreement.
According to the press release, the standard price for a Proteus ONE system, including a multi-year maintenance contract, is between 35 and 45 million euros.
The IFO, a public research hospital in oncology
The IFO ranks among the leading public research hospitals in Italy. It brings together two scientific research institutes for hospitalization and care (IRCCS): the Istituto Nazionale Tumori Regina Elena, dedicated to oncology, and the Istituto Dermatologico San Gallicano, specialized in dermatology.
Based in Rome and founded in 1939, the IFO is a national and international reference for cancer treatment, translational research and precision medicine.
